Artichoke – Green Globe – Eden Seeds

Artichoke – Green Globe is the standard and most common Australian globe artichoke variety, with attractive silver-green foliage and large edible flower buds. Eden Seeds notes that it is also suitable for warm climates and was highly regarded in Paris as far back as 1859.

Growing notes

Globe artichokes are vigorous perennial plants that can remain productive for several years. They prefer well-drained, well-limed soil and should be planted after frost. Harvest flower buds while the heads are tight and before they open.

  • Plant spacing: 160–180 cm
  • Row spacing: 200–240 cm
  • Sowing depth: 1–2 cm
  • Best soil temperature: 15–18°C
  • Sow after frost: Yes
  • Average maturity: approximately 300–400 days

Harvest & maintenance

Cut buds when they are full-sized, swollen and still tightly closed. After the main harvest, cut plants back, enrich the soil with compost or well-rotted manure and mulch heavily. Established plants can be divided every 2–3 years.
