Tomato – Stupice

Stupice is an early tomato valued in cooler growing areas. Plants reach around 1m and bear richly flavoured round red tomatoes up to about 5cm across. Eden lists approximately 60–70 days to maturity.

Growing in the Yarra Valley

Start seed in a warm, bright place under cover in spring. Plant outdoors after the risk of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. Harden seedlings off gradually before planting into a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil.

• Sowing depth: approximately 5mm.
• Spacing: generally 40–60cm between plants; allow extra room for vigorous varieties and good airflow.
• Care: keep moisture steady, water at soil level and mulch once the soil is warm. Support plants as required.

Harvest: check regularly and pick as fruit reaches its ripe colour and yields slightly to gentle pressure. Harvest timing varies with the variety, weather and planting date.
